NG CHONG GUAN, MBBS, MPM, MSc, PhD

 

Dr. Ng Chong Guan is a distinguished psychiatrist and former Professor and Consultant Psychiatrist at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Renowned for his unwavering commitment to advancing mental health care and public awareness, Dr. Ng serves as the Deputy President of the Malaysian Mental Health Association and President Elect of the Malaysian Psychiatric Association, roles through which he passionately advocates for improved mental health policies and community outreach.

 

Driven by a deep-seated passion for understanding and treating complex mental health conditions, Dr. Ng has pursued an extensive academic journey. After completing his Master’s training in Psychological Medicine in 2009, he earned a prestigious scholarship from the European Union (via AsiaLink) to pursue a second Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine, alongside his first Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. In 2017, he completed a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in Psycho-Oncology at the University of Malaya. Furthering his dedication to ethical medical practice, he recently completed a third Master’s degree in Health Research Ethics (MOHRE) at the University of Malaya, under the scholarship of Fogarty International Center of the United States, National Institutes of Health in collaboration with the Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University.

 

Dr. Ng’s academic and clinical pursuits are fueled by his compassionate and approachable personality. Known for his empathy, intellectual curiosity, and ability to connect with patients and colleagues alike, he creates a supportive environment that fosters trust and healing. His enthusiasm for public education is evident in his role as the Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Journal of Psychiatry, where he ensures the dissemination of cutting-edge research. With over 100 international publications, an H-index of 24, and more than 2,000 citations, Dr. Ng’s contributions to psychiatry have earned him recognition as one of the world’s top 2% scientists in 2022, according to a report from Stanford University.

 

An engaging speaker, Dr. Ng is a sought-after mental health professional at local and international conferences, where he shares his expertise and inspires others to prioritize mental health. He communicates effectively in Chinese, Malay, and English, enhancing his ability to connect with diverse audiences.
